Mwanza
A little history
The stories beneath the streets.
Mwanza began as a port and trading centre on Lake Victoria in the late 19th century. Its granite outcrops gave the city its nickname, Rock City, and shaped the way neighbourhoods wrap around the boulders.
The city grew with the railway, the cotton trade, and fishing. Today it is one of Tanzania's fastest-growing urban centres and a gateway to the lake's islands and the Sukuma heartland.
