Arusha sits in the cool northern highlands beneath Mount Meru, halfway between the coast and the great safari parks. It is a city of coffee, markets, and departures — the place where travellers stock up, slow down, and then head for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Kilimanjaro.
Arusha
A little history
The stories beneath the streets.
Arusha grew from a small trading post on the caravan route between the coast and the interior. Its name is linked to the Waarusha people, who have lived in these highlands for generations.
In the 20th century it became an administrative centre and the base for northern safari tourism. The city also hosted the Arusha Accords in the 1990s, which shaped Rwanda's post-genocide political transition.
